06/08/2012 - Assistance Offered to Young People in South Tyneside

Young people who want to start their own businesses are being provided with practical support and guidance from a South Tyneside project.

UcanB was initiated to assist in tackling unemployment and to inspire enterprise in the borough for people aged between 18 and 30 who are neither in education or employment.

It is aimed at young adults, from those who have left school with few to no qualifications, to recent university graduates who are having difficulty gaining employment.

It is now hosting a number of workshops over the summer to assist people to create business ideas and research their possible markets, and to provide guidance on marketing and networking.

Gillian Chapman, project co-ordinator at UcanB, commented:

"The main aim of the workshops is to work directly with young people across South Tyneside to unlock their business potential and develop ideas, plans and research that will get individuals firmly on the road to creating their own business. We aim to make the workshops as welcoming but invigorating as possible to work one-on-one with individuals who have the drive to set up a business but need further help to refine their ideas amongst like-minded people in the right environment."

The four workshops will culminate in a final competition, South Tyneside Bright Sparks, where those that took part will have the opportunity to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges at the end of October. The winning entry will receive a package of prizes designed to assist launch the business.

Ms Chapman said:

"Each individual who attends our series of workshops and enters the Bright Sparks competition will be helped every step of the way by the team of UcanB project co-ordinators to realise their business ambitions. We look forward to meeting some of South Tyneside’s young people interested in bringing their ideas and ambition to our series of workshops."

The UcanB project is delivered by enterprise agency Tedco and is funded through the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

The workshops will be held at Tedco Business Works in South Shields on 14 August, 29 August, and 7 September and 13 September. The final competition will take place on 31 October.
